Charting Chipeling was a year-long project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and delivered in partnership with the Kiplin Trust. It focused on the previously untapped archaeological resource of the grounds surrounding the beautiful Jacobean Kiplin Hall on the banks of the River Swale in North Yorkshire.

Through 2014, teams of volunteers from the local area, along with several hundred local schoolchildren and visiting students from the University of Maryland, took part of archive research, landscape and earthwork survey, historic building recording and excavation.

The project started out looking for the earlier history that pre-dated the Kiplin estate. What we actually found was a complex story of how the successive owners of Kiplin Hall from the 16th century onwards shaped the landscape to their own designs.
